Welcome to New Horizons School!
It is a pleasure to be the physics instructor this year at the Governor's
School for Science and Technology. I trust we all look forward to a full year of college-level study and labs.
Physics I is a college-level, calculus-based physics course
offered to juniors at the Governor’s School for Science and Technology.
Calculus is a co-requisite for this class. The course encourages
hands-on activities, class participation, and students taking
responsibility for their own learning. Physics I is
a school year long course and includes a vast variety of experimentation
along with special projects. Projects in the past have included building
fuel cell cars, doing VEX robotics, building water bottle rockets,
participating in FIRST robotics, building Rube Goldberg machines, etc.
The major
goals in this course are to develop understanding of the content material
which includes mechanics and some chapter of Instructor's choice if time permits as well as to develop problem solving skills with emphasize of the importance of
science as inquiry. Students will be provided many opportunities
throughout the course to design and carry out investigations and to
analyze and evaluate data. Learning fundamental
principles, generalizations, or theories and learning to apply course
material to improve thinking, problem solving, and decision making are
essential general goals. Gaining factual knowledge and developing
specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals
are important general goals.
If you are planning to take SAT Subject Test or ACT Science test,
please make sure you inform your instructor ahead of time about your
decision. It is not our goal to train you for the mentioned tests, but as
a teacher I am willing to put an extra time into preparing you to better
perform on these tests.
