New Horizons Regional Education Centers is the regional educational organization serving the public school divisions of Gloucester County, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg-James City County, and York County. The six school divisions, each by formal resolution, have organized a joint board of trustees to administer and operate a variety of programs on a contract or cost-sharing basis.
In September 1980, the Peninsula Area Cooperative Educational Services (PACES) program began regional day school services for students with serious emotional disturbance as Newport Academy. This program became a part of New Horizons Regional Education Centers in 1993. Educational services are offered to elementary, middle, and high school students at Newport Academy located at the Woodside Lane Campus of New Horizons.
Newport Academy provides a highly structured and supportive educational environment with caring staff trained to meet the unique needs of students with emotional disturbance. Services such as speech therapy, art therapy, recreational therapy, psychological consultation, career awareness, counseling, and life skills instruction are available to enhance the educational experience.
Newport Academy meets the educational needs of a diverse student population. Individualized education plans address Virginia SOLs, functional academics, positive behavior management, and social skills development based on student needs.
The primary goal of the program is to provide appropriate services and insure student success in the least restrictive environment. For some students, Newport Academy is a step-down placement from a more restrictive or residential setting. Others are referred because they have not been successful in their home school division.
